Gov. Springer? Yup - now get over it

Bush & Kerry in 2004 face the strong undercurrent in Ohio of Jerry Springer's likely 2006 gubernatorial run. It would be best if both avoided the arrogant condescension of the mainstremam Ohio media on Springer's suitability.

The Plain Dealer's Brent Larkin, displaying the sophisticated analysis of a foot stomping kindergarten teacher, claims that it would be yet another disaster for Ohio Democrats if Springer ran in 2006.

Hey Brent...get over yourself. (while we're at it, Dick Feagler needs to get over himself, too...he's stomping his foot just as hard as Brent.)

Yes, Ohio Democrats have an inexhaustible supply of incompetence. Yes, it looks desperate to court Springer.

None of that means Jerry Springer shouldn't run for governor.

Springer is a legitimate Ohioan, who has held office in Ohio before, is a very good public speaker, and has been doing a lot of the right things to build a campaign.

I used to be in the "no, Jerry, no" crowd, used to think that we Democrats should adhere to some intellectual purity that demands that we "recruit" candidates as if we were holding a job interview.

The California recall changed my mind.

If Arnold Schwarzenagger and Jesse Ventura can be governors, based on little more than celebrity, Jerry Springer can run for governor of Ohio.

If Springer is able to distance himself a bit from the show (and it won't take much to do that), but still display the uncanny ability to relate to average schmucks which makes the show work, then he will win in 2006. Period.

And a Democratic Governor Springer is better than any Republican.

Too often, Democrats spend more time in search of some silly Aristotlian ideal of politics while Republicans fight like junk yard dogs to win at any cost. Bill Clinton knew that. Brent and Feagler don't.

So we got tipped out of the European Cup by the hosts Portugal in a penalty shoot out, it was however an epic game a nail biter until the last second - you septics should try it two straight 45 minute halves with out commercial breaks every 5 minutes.
there was also some joy, the Surrender monkeys (world champions) and the box heads got turfed by wait for it... Greece and the the Czech republic RESERVES!!!!!

So over here they are saying Dubya's fucked it! after the muslims nailed that soldier.
So you guys are still gonna vote in a stuffed shirt like Kerry. So bearing that in mind Jerry Springer sounds like a good option to me.

Rule Britannia!!!!

Springer is a bastard. Watch his show for 5 minutes. I have no respect for a man that enriches himself by destroying the dignity of people. I've seen Springer talk on C-Span before, and he is a very eloquent guy with a lot of good ideas, but I have a moral aversion to the way he has made his living...

"We should never separate the lives we live from the words we speak. To me, the most important goal is to live a life consistent with the values I hold dear and to act on what I believe in." -Sen. Paul Wellstone

I will be supporting Strickland or Fingerhut or whoever else runs against Jerry in the primary.

Oh paleeze, Surfinglakeerie. Calling Mr. Springer a name like that makes you or your ideas, if you had any, inferior. After your name calling I heard blah blah blah blah blah blah blah! Stick to the issues.

Thank you.

I'm an Ohio resident, and the more I learn about Jerry, the more I wind up liking him almost despite myself.

First of all, he doesn't like the show either ... he's gone on record saying he has no idea why anyone would want to watch it. It's a circus and he gets paid for hosting it; I can't fault the guy for taking the money. It's not like the show is actively hurting anybody. If anything there's a case to be made that by holding the worst of our society up to the light, and really taking a good look at it - rather than glossing over it and pretending it doesn't exist - we can learn from our mistakes and become better people.

Second, he's actually an interesting guy. His "Final Thought" on the show (and more recently on VH1's I Love the 90s) gives you more insight into his character than the nutty guests do. He's smart, he cares about people, he has a sense of humor, and he has this uncanny ability to seem like a voice of sanity in a crazy world.

Third, he's kept in touch with Ohio politics. His blog (run by staffers) is actually pretty interesting, well-written, and relevant.

I didn't think I'd be saying this, but if anyone can resurrect the Ohio democratic party, it'll be someone like Jerry. Because at this point, it's pretty clear that nobody else will.
